2017…ready to abandon my purpose.
I had spent 10 years building a successful business at iBloom. The business was growing, I had an incredible staff that was like family, and we had amazing customers that we loved to serve. I was loving life with my husband and our kids.
However, there were also challenges. The more the business grew, the more it took me away from other things that were really important. I was sacrificing my health. I longed for more intentional, undistracted time with my family. Though the business was successful, we had to continue to scale for growth, so that meant I was paying out far more in expenses than I was actually taking home to my family. There were hard days where I wanted to abandon my purpose of inspiring women and focus exclusively on my purpose of being a wife and mom.
I knew something needed to change, but for a while I was too scared to acknowledge it to myself let alone anyone else. Perhaps you can relate? I desperately wanted more health, time, and financial freedom while still living out my purpose and making a difference.
There had to be another way.
At the same time, I was a business coach to a leader in a network marketing company. She was one rank away from the highest rank in the company and had hired me to help her hit her goal. It was a new company to me, so I had to study the products, marketing and comp plan in depth.
The more I studied, the more I was intrigued.
- The success stories were so inspiring. These were products I personally NEEDED. And, the company offered a 60-day money back guarantee that only 1% of people used. That was a huge sign that the products must really work.
- The company was debt free and had a reputation for always doing the right thing.
- The products were consumable and someone would need to order them every month to continue to feel amazing. (As a business coach, I knew this was a MUST to have a sustainable business!)
- And, it was the best network marketing comp plan I’d ever seen.
Though I’ve always LOVED and supported the network marketing industry, this was the first time that I wanted to join for myself. What if this could be my way to the health, time, and financial freedom that I really wanted?
I jumped in.
These products and the company have been a HUGE blessing in my life! I lost 44lbs, healed my body of so many ailments, and am feeling better than when I was a teenager. But, it wasn’t just me- my husband, kids, mom, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law & her family, friends and iBloom followers were also seeing health transformations. This was truly changing lives and how could I not share about it.
My personal business grew fast- mostly because of the online platform that I had built. I had spent a decade building relationships and providing value, so when I shared about products that I was loving – of course they wanted to try it. I attracted product users and those who wanted to do the business with me.
I didn’t do the more traditional ways of marketing- like creating the list of 100, sending the copy/paste messages, or constantly hosting in person events.
Instead I focused my efforts online by providing value: hosting webinars, creating a group where I could educate and share stories, and having opt-ins where I gave away free content. With each of these things, I was able to “attract” the people who were interested in what I had to offer. They expressed interest by signing up and then I was able to take them on an automated journey.
But, there was a problem.
Most of the people on my team didn’t have an online platform prior to joining our network marketing company, so they had to do the more traditional methods.
And, to be honest, I didn’t realize how awful the traditional methods felt. When someone on my team said they “hated sending the messages,” I thought it was just a mindset issue. Boy was I wrong! It wasn’t until I forced myself to do the traditional methods for 30 days that I realized it wasn’t mindset at all.
- It is icky to have a “quota” of people that you need to message every day.
- It is icky to build a relationship with someone when I know the motive is really wanting them to sign up for what I’m selling.
- And, when you have a small list of people, the “No” is far more painful and personal.
I realized that those methods weren’t authentic to who I am and it’s definitely not how I’ve built my businesses!
Here are a few realities:
- Everyone isn’t your prospect.
- Marketing to family and friends isn’t a business strategy.
- No one likes to receive copy/paste messages.
Thankfully, there is good news!
